This was by far the best campground we've been to. Campsite #25, in our opinion, is the best campsite because it was secluded from the others by the Rhododendron's. Despite being amongst other campers, and close by, it was as if we were in the middle of the forest by ourselves. We hiked the Bearwallow Trail to Turkey Trot Trail, to Forest Road Trail to Raven Rock Trail, and then down back to camp. The trails were perfectly marked, and I mean exceptionally perfectly marked. There wasn't a moment that we went very long without seeing a trail marker. There was a time that we crossed a small bit of the creek and there was a marker at the edge on a turned over tree- most hikes make you look for the markers, and in that scenario, it would have been on the next upright tree, not at the edge.. For such an extensive hike, we were glad to enjoy the trek without worrying if we were still on the right path. Highly recommend this place and already have.

Roan Mountain State Park and the Roan Highlands are on the top of my list of places to camp and hike. The park itself is beautiful, enveloped in forest, surrounded by mountains.  It is only 5 miles from Carvers Gap, where you can hike to Round Bald, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge Bald. As it is part of the Appalachian Trail, we meet lots of thru-hikers on the trail. The views of the Appalachians from the top of the balds are stunning. Within the park are several excellent trails, some challenging but worth the effort. We also like to drive further to Elk Knob and Boone, NC to hike and eat. Come in mid-May or late June to see lots of wildflowers. Our campsite is on a slope and a little tight even for our 23-foot. camper. But it is well-shaded, and we have decent wifi. The bathhouse in our camp area looks new and has a nice shower.

Have camped here 40 years, and Roan never disappoints. Excellent staff. The Rangers were excited to talk to botanists/plant nerds about the area's awesome native plants! Hope to ge back for a Naturalists gathering.

It's one of my favorite state parks. Nice campgrounds in a wooded setting. Have spots for RVs and tent campers. They have cabins also. The Doe river runs through it with trout fishing. Up the road 8 miles from the campground are the rhododendron gardens. Some of the largest native rhodidendron gardens in the world. The mountain is covered with them. Love this place

We had such an amazing time at Roan Mountain State Park. We stayed in cabin 1 and we absolutely loved it. The park is so pretty. We loved how beautiful the entire place was. The scenery and foliage and creek, and hills...everything was very beautiful. We got very lucky with our cabin being located where it was due to having to cart your things in. And I loved our location because we had a nice little field area in front of our cabin. The cabin was very nice for the price. I didn't mind so much the whole "unplugged" thing. I wouldn't have minded a TV though. The beds were also rock hard. I woke up a couple of mornings hardly able to stand up my back was hurting SO bad. I almost slept on the couch. That's kind of a big thing for me because if I'm paying a lot of money to stay somewhere, the least I want is good sleep. We were very happy to see that we were located right by the 'playground' but then we see its only a set of swings, so I don't think I'd really advertise it as a playground. I really really hope they will eventually open up the pool. If they had the pool, I would have wanted to stay all summer. But we had to drive over 30 minutes to find somewhere to swim and that was a whole other story (lets just say you won't find a decent place to swim in the area). We absolutely loved that they had a game room with WIFI and rocking chairs outside. A lot of people would be up there in the evenings to use the internet. They have a pool table, TV, and claw machines. So even though there is no service or wifi at the cabins or campground, there is a place to just sit and chill and do whatever you need on wifi. We saw so many deer just walking through the park, and even through our yard. We got back to our cabin late one evening and found one just laying in our yard! We loved that. We also enjoyed walking the trails. We did try to do the Peg Leg trail and we went to the gravel parking area and the path led to the creek, but from there, there was no markers or anything telling us where to go. Maybe it was just us, but we decided not to do it because we didn't get lost..but maybe we just missed it. Overall, LOVED it. Get the pool going, and we will be back next summer for a week. Oh and also, we loved the owls. I didn't catch the ranger's name- Alyssa maybe? but she did a great job doing the aviary demonstration July 4th.

Roam mountain state park is a beautiful place. The lower part has one of the coolest visitor centers with an old style waterwheel and a lovely center and gift shop. The historic house and area is quite nice. The top of the mountain has some amazing views and some great hiking trails. The upper road is currently closed for work being done near the roadadendrian gardens. The mountain, views, trails, history and river make this a great place for about anyone.

I came to for the Spring Naturalist Rally with friends. It was such a beautiful location & the campground is REALLY nice. The sites are kind of private & wooded compared to some campgrounds. It was also nice & quiet. Everyone was super kind & the Rally was impressive. Everyone was so knowledgeable! It was about 4 hours for us, but I'd love to go back. ⛺️

The campground is now our favorite family campground. We loved the tent site we chose and the bathroom houses were extremely well kept! WiFi throughout the campground which was nice because there wasn’t much phone service. We can’t wait to come back!
