It was very enjoyable to visit the state capitol. The museum is on the same ground as the capital. The museum is free and takes about an hour and a half to complete all of the exhibits. The museum starts in prehistoric times and goes to the late '70s. The museum holds a lot of amazing artifacts. We were very impressed with the quality of the items and the richness of the history. If you are going to be in the Capitol, it is worth your time to go through the museum.

Super annoying/frustrating incident at this museum: we went their, expecting to see some exhibits, but the museum was closed for this day. I'm sure it had a reasonable explanation, but please, publish such things at least on your website! We specifically did a detour to take a look at this museum and so were disappointed to see it closed. We also double checked, if it was open today, as this was then our 3rd time an attraction wasn't open, although it was marked as open by its website.
Oh well. At least the Capitol was nice to look at.

I brought international students here for a day trip and we all had a great time. There are plenty of coves and exhibits throughout the museum, including an old diner and a walking roadway through time. It seems to be kid-friendly, too!

MUST SEE!!! 10/10!!! By far my favorite part of the downtown West Virginia capital area! Open to the public as an amazing completely free museum. Even my teenage daughter put her phone down to read and explore the museum! Plan to spend at least 2 hours to just do the basic walk around. But could easily spend a whole day here!

This was our first stop in Charleston. Me and my younger brother did not plan to stay long, because we had other plans in WV, but this ended up being our favorite part of the trip! We went early in the morning, so we almost had it to ourselves. Not only is the history interesting and well-organized, but the exhibits are aesthetically pleasing and really fun! It is nicely done and FREE, so a perfect place to bring a family. We parked in the state Capitol meter parking, (which happened to be free that day,) and it was a quick walk to get to the museum.

Went to the Vandalia Gathering over Memorial Day weekend. What a great cultural event. Listening to fiddles, banjo, mandolin, dulcimers, and guitars in competition or in small groups just for the love of playing. The dancing inside the museum was wonderful. Heard the Liars contest. The gorgeous quilts hanging in th museum are a work of art in their own right.

This was a great museum. We have been traveling around to visit all of the state museums and this was one of my favorites.

The displays are really interesting and well done. There is an elevator and large open rooms for those that need accessible areas. I was easily able to navigate it with my electric scooter.

On the first floor there is a one room family/handicap bathroom which was super easy to get in and out of. I wish they had one on each floor. The remaining floor had standard bathrooms with stalls.

There is also a cafe with prepackaged sandwiches and snacks. They also have coffee and coffee drinks. I enjoyed my ham sandwich and these unique potato chips with Indian spices.

Parking was straightforward and easily accessible. I would certainly revisit again.

Was very impressed. We spent quite a lot of time here and still did not get to see everything. The layout adds to the experience. Definitely worth checking out. If you enjoy museums at all plan on at least a half a day. However since it is free you can still stop in if you only have an hour.
