Awesome stop! The garden is pretty big with tons of beautiful sights and cool statues. The museum is very clean and pretty big as well. Lots of interesting paintings, sculptures and more. They even have a cool little theater room to cool off and watch drone footage of the garden and stuff in. Highly recommend it, oh and it’s FREE!!

If you're in Shreveport, you absolutely need to come here! Spend the whole day if possible.

Full of interesting and important European and American art. The plaques did an excellent job imparting just how important each and every piece is, its history, its impact on art, what it does well, what it meant to the artist and others when it was made--I've never seen a museum so thoroughly dedicated to helping people enjoy and understand art. It's hidden away in a residential neighborhood--completely unexpected. Please donate on your way out!

Parking is very limited. They don't have a proper lot, you just park in the semicircle as close to the curb as you can.

I had a great time visiting the museum and botanical gardens. I went two days in a row because there was so much to enjoy. If I had time, I would have gone on a third day. I get lost in the emotions evoked by art, and this experience was no different. I do wish there was a more thorough artist statement for more of the pieces.

The R.W. Norton is a hidden gem that should be listed as one of Shreveport’s crown jewels! This gallery is more than just amazing art, it also has artifacts as well, making it a gallery and museum. We got there an hour before opening and it wasn’t too busy. The staff were friendly and waiting to open the door for you. They were gleefully answering questions and giving tours (which you have to set up in advance). It’s laid out very well and is also child friendly with numerous areas for little ones. It’s free to get in, but I would highly suggest giving a donation, because they should really be charging for entry. If you’re looking to get cultured, spend some family time, or escape poor weather, this is the place to be! We will be visiting again!

The R W Norton Museum is an immaculately maintained facility. The floors are polished to a high gloss, shinier than the finish on my car. The only lint or dust in the facility probably came from my Carhartt tee shirt. It has a stately, reverent, ambiance that causes everyone to feel like they have to whisper. I am not sure why; sound doesn’t damage paintings only bright light does. As long as you don’t use a flash you can take as many pictures as you like. And I did. There are docents available through out the museum to answer questions. A first, I thought they were stationed to keep a watchful eye on people of questionable character like me.

I am a big fan of Charles Russell and Frederic Remington. The museum has a great collection of Russell’s painting, along with works from many other western artists. The collection is not solely western art, there is a good variety. Check the pictures.
If you are a folk-art enthusiast, or if you are an Antiques Roadshow nerd, you may have seen paintings by Clementine Hunter, a local artist from Natchitoches Parish. The history of this lady is worth the time to read if you are not familiar with her work. Anyway, getting to see her work was my event of serendipity from the visit.

In comparison, I enjoyed the R W Norton Museum, much more than I do the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa.

The Norton is truly a gem in the Shreveport Bossier City area. A beautiful space featuring art of every form, as well as traveling exhibitions. Going for an afternoon of strolling the hallways in detail, a specific visit to the gardens or children's area, time spent at the Norton is a wonderful experience.

A free art gallery?! Can you get any better?!
Not to mention they also have an array of historical artifacts you could spend hours marveling at and reading about.
When I visited, a nice lady (I think her name is Danielle) noticed my friend and I admiring a painting and she asked us if we’d like to know more, then blessed us with all sorts of cool facts! We continued to ask questions and learn lots about all sorts of cool things they had there.
Seriously - this place is awesome and I will come back to check out the garden once spring is in full swing!
