Very well organized camping ground (even though sometimes you can't find the camp host), a lot of space and privacy for each spot and definitely way less crowded than the South Rim campground. Less than half a mile away hiking from the Chasm View viewpoint, which is a fabulous one!

Well maintained roads, well maintained grounds, would camp again! Especially since I had clouds in the evening and the nightsky is supposed to be magical here!

The North Rim is a hike to get there, but worth it! We got there around 11am so that we could get a decent campsite since there are only 13 spots. (The South Rim was completely reserved.) We were rewarded with options. We took spot number 1 which was pretty spacious and private. You can take a short walk behind the site and have a great view of the canyon - we watched the sunset from the back of our site.

The vault toilets are stinky - but it is a haul to get there to service them. There are also trash and recycling bins which we didn’t see at any other campgrounds on our weeklong trip. The campground also has water. The other sites don’t offer as much privacy - but then again, people are there to see the canyon. A short walk from camp is the “Chasm View Trail”.

Get here early or don't come at all. I've camped here many times and every time it fills up by 2 or 3 pm. Yet ALL NIGHT people keep driving through the loop looking for a spot. This is INCREDIBLY rude to the campers as people will drive though with the brights on, sometimes going around the loop several times. Don't do this! If its after dark find somewhere else to camp. This is not a hotel. Nobody wants your headlights pointed at their camp.

The North Rim of the Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park is breathtaking. 13 sites available to those who get there first. Take the 2.5 mile hike out to Deadhorse Gulch. You won’t regret it.

We just left the North Rim Campground at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. There are only 13 sites and it is first come, first served. We arrived by about 3:00 pm on a Friday afternoon in July and there were 3 sites left, probably because the area is so remote (dirt road to get there and not even a gas station store within 30 min). There wasn't a tent pad, but there was a flat space big enough for our 6 person tent. The ground in our site was soft and springy, very comfortable. There was a fire pit and a picnic table provided at each site. There is potable water from a spigot, but since they have to bring the water in by truck it is best to use it sparingly. The campground has pit toilets rather than flush for that reason. It was a quiet campground and many of the campsites had shade from pine trees. What I liked best about the campground was that the Chasm View Trailhead is right in the campground and you can walk out to the first viewpoint in less than 5 minutes and have extraordinary views of the canyon. We walked the trail 3-4 times and saw the canyon at sunset and dawn. The ranger station is also walking distance from the campground and the trailhead out to Exclamation Point. The hike out to the Point was an easy 1.5 miles with almost no elevation gain, though there were a few times that there was loose gravel with a nice drop off nearby to keep it interesting. Every viewpoint we visited along the North Rim was beautiful with epic cliff top views and offered different perspectives of the canyon. The views from Exclamation Point were equally impressive, but there were no guardrails which my daughters found very upsetting since the drop offs were abrupt and precipitous. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and loved being so close to the canyon. Both of the photos are from the Chasm View Trail.
