Words previously used such as gem or jewel partly describe this incredible, amazing, spectacular collection! I was completely overwhelmed by the beauty and quality of the artistic contributors. My impression of the collection is a quiet strength throughout the works. I can't believe I have never known about the Maier, and strongly encourage everyone to take time to visit. Works of Henri, O'Keefe, Wood as well as many brilliant new artists draw you in and do not let go. I would plan on spending a few hours as there is so much to see. The only reason I did not rate the museum a 5 start is that I want it to be larger! *Note* annual loan exhibition will be displayed in the fall of 2023, plan to participate, it's worth your time when you experience the awe gallery after gallery!

One of Lynchburg’s lovely hidden gems. It will probably take half an hour to walk through, but the permanent art collection is fantastic and whatever they have in the temporary exhibit is always good. The service is always very good. Perfect date spot in a quiet corner behind Randolph College. Head over to Rivermont Pizza for a post-museum dinner, or take a walk on Randolph’s beautiful campus.

Small but well curated with a variety of art from local artists and beyond. Located on a darn fine piece of real estate, the Randolph College campus, and makes for a great addition for any visitor’s itinerary while visiting the college, Rivermont neighborhood, or Lynchburg in general.

I have visited the Maier Museum during several different exhibitions. Its repertoire includes original exhibitions (sometimes curated from Randolph College's art collection and other times curated from contemporary American art by artists around the country). Other times, the museum hosts traveling exhibitions. I have found most of the exhibitions to be very educational, and they almost always include eye-opening art that I had never seen before.

Most staff members and volunteers know the stories behind many of the works of art on display, making the tours more well worth the time. The museum can be toured in well under an hour, although you could spend more time there asking questions about art on display.

I also have observed volunteers giving tours to school children, and they know well how to adjust their explanations to the level of their audience. Because of this, it may be a good destination for a classroom or family outing.

(Note: I used to work for Randolph College, which operates the Maier Museum, but I am employed elsewhere now.)

The Maier Museum of art is a must see for art lovers visiting or living in Lynchburg. The Maier overlooks the beautiful campus of Randolph College. The museum possesses and displays a world class collection of American Art, from artists you have actually heard of, such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Thomas Cole, George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, and many more! The museum is constantly changing the exhibitions to incorporate new acquisitions and travelling works. In addition to exhibition which are changed about three times per year, the museum also hosts artist talks and other learning events throughout the year. Children and groups are welcomed by the museum educator or the knowledgeable docents. Admission is free!

This is a jewell of a collection for late 1800s/early 1900s American art. A who's who of the canon with both quintessential and "make you think" examples of artists works. For those seeking the influence of women in the arts, the collection concept was put together by a woman and there are several wonderful pieces by well and lesser known women artists - an unusual Georgia O'Keeffe, a magical Judy Pfaff, a classic Cassatt, a striking Marion Boyd Allen portrait of Anna Vaughn Hyatt sculpting Joan of Arc on horseback. Definitely worth a detour if you are in the area. Suggested itinerary: Blue ridge Parkway, Jefferson's Poplar Forest and Meier Art Museum.

We visited here during a shot visit to Lynchburg, and we amazed to find a strong collection including well-known American artists and other interesting things. Signage was great too. HIghly recommended.
