A great museum that happens to be free that shows history about Sergeant Floyd, the riverboat, other boats, ships, native Americans and the areas history. Very educational and interesting. Hands on displays up top where you steer the boat, kids got to ring the bell. We all enjoyed our time at the museum, nice gift shop with an area for info on other attractions in and around the state.

I found the Sargent Floyd River Museum to be pretty interesting. Getting the river boat in it place must have been enough of a challenge. But they constructed a nice museum inside. My favorite was the wheel house. The wife even rang the bell. The rest of the upper deck was well done as exhibits of the ships spaces for the captain. But there was a lot to see and learn of the middle deck, which was more of the dedicated museum.
We didn't go into the gift shop down on what I guess is the engine room, because we were very short on time. We had trouble finding the museum. The address listed on Google maps took us to the park south of the museum when using my GPS. I wound up using the address of the hotel next door to get me there. But the lost time hurt my available time to visit.
So try to give yourself time just in case you find yourself reading and such. There are restrooms right next door in the parking lot. Just a surprisedly nice place. But remember to sign the book.

Top notch museum on a riverboat! The top floor allows you to visit the ships controls and captain quarters, the 2nd floor shows extensive history of the local Native American tribes, the beaver pelt demand and trade as well as Sioux City Missouri River History. The bottom floor (and entry) shows the boats mechanics, a wide selection of Iowa travel brochures and a fun (affordable) gift shop. Fun and free place for locals and travelers alike, next door to some picnic tables, clean restrooms and a playground.

We really enjoyed our visit and was immediately greeted by Dom who was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about his job managing the Welcome Center. Many displays and exhibits are presented throughout both floors. The children were even enjoying the museum. Sgt Floyd whom the riverboat is named after is honored by numerous displays and exhibits. The Welcome center has many handouts and gifts. Sign the log to validate your visit.

I visited this Steamboat expecting it was a welcome to Iowa establishment but it's lot more. You can walk around inside the boat and see exhibits and learn the history of the area. I noticed they were a couple of families that brought children and their children were excited about what they had to learn. It's also a chance to see the inside of an authentic Steamboat that plowed the Waters of the Missouri. They have the largest collection of tourist information I have seen in Iowa.
Very close by you'll find the Betty Strong Encounter that has sculptures on the grounds and a statue to Lewis and Clarks expedition. Between the encounter and the steamboat is a picnic area. This could be a great outing for a family.
